Like many events, the Cleveland Dragon Boat Festival, sponsored by the Cleveland Dragon Boat Association, was cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic, so its return is very welcome, especially to the rowers who’ve been honing their skills and teamwork since April.
The teams of 20 that have been practicing since then will take to the water, in their boats with the colorful carved dragon figureheads, propelled by a drummer, starting at 9am. While dragon boating is a Chinese tradition dating back thousands of years, it enjoyed a modern resurgence in the last 25 years with people of all backgrounds and ages benefiting from the chance to get outdoors, get some exercise and enjoy a sport that involves friendly teamwork.
Even if you’re not a rower, the spectacle of the colorful boats is well worth observing. Plus there’ll be vendors, food trucks, entertainment and a DJ making for a fun day. It takes place at Riverside Park’s Black River Landing in Lorain. It’s free and open to the public to watch.
