The anti-choice/anti-woman forces have won their Supreme Court victory to impose a fringe religious belief about when “life” begins on all women, but that overreach “victory” is already blowing up in their faces. On August 2, voters in Kansas, one of the country’s reddest states, went to the polls and overwhelmingly voted to keep abortion legal despite a massive anti-choice campaign primarily funded by the Catholic Church. (In desperation, the anti-choice forces have now raised money for a recount of the largest counties, but an 18-point loss is not going to change.)
Now battles are being fought across the country as state after Republican-dominated state moves to deprive women of reproductive right, leaving pro-choice advocates scrambling to find ways to allow women to exercise control of their bodies. Ohio organizations such as Planned Parenthood and independent abortion clinic Preterm are developing programs to send women to clinics in pro-choice states such as Illinois, now that Ohio has been the procedure at six weeks — before many women even know they’re pregnant, leaving others with no time to raise the money or make plans.
That’s what the event Roe’d Rage is all about. Taking place at Lakewood’s witchcraft store Coven, it’s an abortion travel fundraiser to help those women whose options have been drastically narrowed. In addition to the suggested donation ticket prices of $25 (you can give more if you’re so moved), there will be raffle tickets and gift baskets, and Blue Cobweb’s new abortion ’zine will be available for sale, with all proceeds going to Planned Parenthood’s and Preterm’s abortion travel funds. Speakers from both organizations will be at the event to provide information and answer questions.
All who support the right of people to control their own bodies free of the dictates of pastors, priests, bishops and Republican politicians are welcome
