NE Ohio Artist Amy Casey Part of Canton Art Museum’s Fall Shows

Tue 8/23-Sun 10/30

It’s new exhibit time at the Canton Museum of Art (CMA), which opens a group of new shows on the same day.

Its 2022-23 season opens this week with its fall exhibits, a diverse group that includes another of its theme shows featuring works from its own collection dedicated to illusions; a show dedicated to 20th-century Canton landscape watercolorist Gerry Bernhardt one exploring the evolution of American printmaking; and a solo show of work by one of our favorite northeast Ohio painters, Amy Casey, called Continued Continuing.

Speaking of illusions, Casey’s work is based around a subject/theme that might seem limited on the surface — her figurative work depicts urban buildings, usually in multiples. But her fertile imagination places these buildings in improbable or impossible situations that have more than a whiff of surrealism. Recently that means being engulfed by nature in some way: afloat in an ocean or embedded in a tree stump or being overgrown with mushrooms. Cityscapes collide with wild landscapes in a way that suggests both a conflict between civilization and nature and a possible détente between them.

All four shows will be on view through October 30. There will be an opening celebration on Friday September 2 @ 5-7PM.
