In case your idea of a great Labor Day weekend is hanging out in a big crowd and drinking a lot of beer, head on out to the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds in Berea for the Cleveland Oktoberfest.
It’s almost like a second county fair! There’s an endless amount of the sort of food you’re better off eating only on special occasions (although you can work some of it off on the 5K Bier Run), a giant Glockenspiel marking each hour with skits, sing-alongs and dancing, and lots of music, including polka artists such as Alex Meixner, who’ll play the closing set each night from September 2-5, and the Chardon Polka Band, along with German music and dance groups.
For animal lovers, there will be wiener dog races although they admit, “Okay, so dachshunds aren’t born to run, but they are cute, and they really try–well, most of them do.” And on Sunday September 4, there’ll be fireworks at dusk.
This year, the event runs for two weekends so if your Labor Day is too packed to get over there, you’ve got a second shot.
