Radio programmers in different formats have conferences each year to trade ideas and learn what’s happening around the counry. “Summitfest,” devoted to the Adult Album Alternative, or Triple A, format recently took place in Boulder, Colorado.
This year, Brad Savage of Akron’s WAPS-FM, ironically known as “The Summit,” was named 2022 Triple-A Program Director of the Year, beating out nominees from stations in New York City, Philadelphia, Minneapolis and Los Angeles.
“Honestly, I just love seeing Akron, Ohio right next to stations from much larger markets,” says Savage. “Our region has a rich history of music discovery, and together we will continue to celebrate the past, present, and future of recorded music.”
Savage has been with WAPS-FM since 2015 when he replaced the legendary Bill Gruber, who retired after 30 years. He’d previous worked at stations in Charlottesville, Virginia; Ann Arbor, Michigan; Madison, Wisconsin and Columbia, Missouri.
The Summit is the non-commercial, member-supported, public radio service of Akron Public Schools and produces special programming in addition to playing Triple A music. It’s heard at 91.3FM in the Akron/Canton area, 90.7 in the Mahoning Valley and 90.1FM in Athens, Ohio. It can also be heard around the world streaming on its website.
