Like many such programs, the Roberto Ocasio Latin Jazz Camp has been on pause for two years. This year it’s welcoming back its cohort of kids in grade 8-12 on all instruments to participate in a week-long day camp taking place at Case Western Reserve University.
The camp debuted in 2005, the year after beloved jazz Cleveland musician/educator Roberto Ocasio died in a one-car accident on an icy day in January 2004. His friends and family launched the Roberto Ocasio Foundation and created this signature event to pass the musical form he was dedicated to on to another generation.
As usual, New York-based percussionist/educator Bobby Sanabria, Ocasio’s former classmate from Berklee College of Music, will direct the camp, which culminates on Friday July 15 with a concert at CWRU’s Harkness Chapel. Sanabria will perform, leading the camp students and faculty, graduate students and guest artists in an evening of Latin jazz. The concert is free and open to the public with open seating. “For All Ages — Bring family, friends, and your best toe-tapping shoes!” they say.
