Tri-C JazzFest made a triumphant return to Playhouse Square after two dark years, with two days and evenings of concerts inside the historical theaters and outside on two stages — one featuring a lineup of local jazz, pop, rock and reggae musicians, the other featuring the talented teens from the Tri-C jazz education programs. We caught the outdoor action on Friday with swamp rockers Cats on Holiday, jazz/soul ensemble the Walter Barnes Band, a tribute to recently deceased local jazz organist Eddie Baccus Sr, and a closing set by popular reggae band Carlos Jones & the P.L.U.S. Band.

Cleveland-born sax player Joe Lovano, who has gone on to become an international star, sat for an interview in the food/hospitality tent, and trumpet player Dominck Farinacci, another Clevelander whose career is now global and who returns to direct the Tri-C JazzFest camp, stood on the sidelines proudly as his young students took their solos. And a magician and balloon artist entertained the many kids in the crowd.

To cap the night, giant puppets and costumed dancers joined the crowd who packed the stage area to dance to the P.L.U.S. Band’s upbeat sounds on a perfect summer night.
