Foothill Galleries Features Reimagined Nature Images by Michael Weil

Thu 6/16 @ 8:30AM

Mon 6/27 @ 5:30PM

Michael Weil, owner of the Foothill Galleries in Cleveland Heights, has shown some impressive work by outstanding area artists in the past several years. But he’s also a dedicated photographer — hence his interest in focusing his gallery mostly on photo-based work — and now he’s showcasing his own work in The Huebris Quatrefolio First Stanza ~ Regarding Trees.

“These images start with a reference to a place once seen, considered, and photographed, then the locus and hues shift to the primal attraction and childhood fascination with light, shade, patterns, and colors,” he says in his artist statement. “I interpret reality in all my pictures, I don’t try to capture it. Water gathered from the stream is not the stream. A photograph is a fixed, selective, reflection and re-presentation; a synecdoche of the subject first framed in the camera. Each image in The Huebris Quatrefolio is a photo-based interpretation printed in quadrants with all the imposition and handiwork essential to artistic creation.”

The new series features “intertwined branches, arabesque grasses, elegant blossoms, tessellate ice shards, and ancient trees,” as their raw material, which Weil reworks and reimagines. You can stop in and see the show Tuesdays and Thursdays @ 9am-noon and Wednesdays @ 3-5pm. If you’ll like to hear more about what went into these images, Weil has two artist talks scheduled: a breakfast talk on Thursday June 16 @ 8:30am and a cocktail hour talk on Monday June 23 @ 5:30pm.
