Sculptor Fred Gearhart Hosts His Annual Open Yard/Studio

Sat 5/28 & Sun 5/29 @ 1-7PM

Driving down Rydalmount Road in Cleveland Heights, just west of Severance Center, you’d never guess that one of those neat single-family homes held a beautifully landscaped sculpture garden, packed with the work of the artist who lives there. The only hint might be the sculpture on the front lawn.

After his retirement as a high school history teacher, Fred Gearhart began to devote most of his time to his work, creating mostly stone sculptures (with some wood and some cast bronze) in his garage workshop. If you frequent local galleries, you’ve probably seen some of his work.

Once a year he opens up his backyard garden to the public to browse, hang out, talk about art and purchase some of his pieces for their own homes and gardens. Approximately 200 works, both figurative and abstract, are nestled between the plants in all sizes, and mostly at affordable prices, whether you’re looking for a small stone vase or a large, dramatic piece to put by your front door. And you can stop in Gearhart’s backyard studio and learn from him how he creates his pieces.

The open house, at 1609 Rydalmount Road, takes place rain or shine. It’s free and open to the public.
