Liza Grossman founded the Cleveland-based Contemporary Youth Orchestra in 1995 to give talented young musicians from across the region the opportunity to work with contemporary composers — both classical and pop — and perform their music. They’ve done frequent collaborative performances with rock & pop musicians such as Jefferson Starship, Kenny Logins, Graham Nash, Bootsie Collins, Pat Benatar and Styx.
Grossman stepped down as the group’s leader last year, and in her place, noted local trombone player/composer/educator Kris Morron, veteran of diverse area bands include the funk-based Aphrodesiatics, electronic Afrobeat ensemble Mifuné, experimental folk group the Trepanning Trio and the New Orleans-style Revolution Brass Band, was appointed CYO’s new music director/conductor.
He’s continuing the ensemble’s tradition of working with artists in various genres and his own background in diverse, rhythm-heavy global sounds by bringing Cleveland-based Brazilian guitarist/songwriter/vocalist Luca Mundaca on board to work with the ensemble for a show titled “Drops of Color.”
She’ll be bringing both her own music, influenced by her own country’s samba and bossa nova beats as well as American jazz. The show will also feature the music of one of Brazil’s best known composers Antonio Carlos Jobim, with the orchestra will playing four Jobim pieces written specifically for orchestra, rarely performed works that appeared on his 2005 album Symphonic Jobim.
The concert takes place at the Tri-C Metro Auditorium. It will also be livestreamed. Get tickets here.
