Only in Oberlin would you be able to hear Des Canyons aux Étoiles, commissioned by Alice Tully to commemorate the US Bicentennial, PLUS the 80-minute solo organ work Méditations sur les Mystére de lat Sainte Trinité, both by the incomparable Oliver Messiaen.
Des Canyons was rescheduled because of the pandemic, and then organizers decided to pair the two expansive masterworks together on Fri 04.22, preceded by a free public forum the previous day, Thu 04.21, discussing the music and influence of Messiaen, who passed away 30 years ago this month. Music lovers will rejoice!
