Kent’s Standing Rock Cultural Arts Honors the Environment in Films, Art & More

From “American Scar”

Thu 4/21-Sat 4/23

Kent’s Standing Rock Cultural Arts is  once again presenting its “Who’s Your Mama?” Earth Day and Environmental Film Festival for the 16th year, encompassing a variety of events.

For a start, there’s its 22nd annual Environmental Art Group Show now open at its North Water Street Gallery, on view through Saturday May 28.

Then there’s a pair of free film screenings. On Thursday April 21 @ 6-8pm at the Kent Free Library, check out Fantastic Fungi, a 2019 documentary that explores the role mushrooms play in our ecosystem and their healing powers. On Friday April 22 @ 6-9pm at KIVA Auditorium on the Kent State University campus, you can catch an evening of short climate-related documentaries, including American Scar, a 2021 doc on the devastating long-term impact on the nature and topography of the border region caused by the building of Trump’s ineffectual “Wall.”

Then on Saturday April 23 @ 1-4pm, come down to Franklin Mills Riveredge Park under the Main Street Bridge by the waterfall in downtown Kent dressed as an animal or “eco hero” and have your photo taken. There’s a $100 prize for the best costume.
