Anyone can take part in the City Nature Challenge, which is a great way to get city kids to think more about what’s going on in the outdoor spaces around them. You don’t need a science background and you can do it anywhere nearby — your backyard, the local park, a vacant lot on your block.
Created in 2016 by staff members of science museums in Los Angeles and San Francisco, the international event invites people to document plants and wildlife in cities around the world. Traditionally it’s been a competition to engage the most people and document the most species and specimens and, although the competitive aspects of it was dropped in the last two years due to the pandemic. For 2022, they say, “This year’s City Nature Challenge is a hybrid between collaboration and competition.”
Locally, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History is collaborating with the Cleveland Metroparks, Stark Parks and Metroparks Toledo — and they’re hoping you can help them do well. To find out more and participate in the local challenge, go here. The challenge starts on Friday April 29 and runs through Monday May 2.
