There’s not much that’s more high-energy than a Cuban band at full tilt, playing the music of its native island. Havana’s Orquesta Akokán, a ensemble of a dozen players, was inspired by the mambo sounds of Cuba in the 40s and 50s, and the big stars that performed in its nightclubs. Founded and led by vocalist José “Pepito” Gómez, the group features both seasoned and youthful musicians for a sound that’s both traditional and fresh — and made for moving your body. It hasn’t really had too much opportunity to spread its sound in the U.S.: it released its debut album on New York’s Daptone label in 2018 and its sedcond in 2021, just as the pandemic was winding down.
Now finally able to hit the road, it arrives at the Music Box Supper Club this week. Tickets range from $30-$45. DJ Nacho provides extra music.
