For its next concert, CityMusic Cleveland will be back at one of its familiar stomping grounds, the Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus in Slavic Village (worth going just to see the spectacular interior).
The program is called “Gems Old and New” and it continues the group’s commitment to programming music by under-recognized composers, especially women and Black composers, and commissioning new pieces.
They’ll be doing the world premiere of Clarinet Quartet with Percussion, by noted Cleveland-based composer Margaret Brouwer, a piece commissioned by CityMusic Cleveland. That’s the “new.” And they’ll play Adoration for Clarinet and Strings by early 20th century Black composer Florence Price. That’s older. And the “old” and more familiar piece is Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet n A Major.
Clarinetist Ellen Breakfield Glick will get quite a workout here, her instrument standing in contrast to the string quartet. Other musicians include violinists Masha Andeini and Eunho Kim, violist Yael Senamaud, cellist Trevor Kazarian and percussionist Luke Rinderknecht.
As always with CityMusic concerts, it’s free.
