Abbatoir Gallery isn’t that well-known in Cleveland yet, partly because it’s off the beaten track, located in the Hildebrandt Building on the border of Ohio City and Clark-Fulton, and partly because it opened at the start of the pandemic when things on the art scene were pretty low-key.
But it’s worth adding to your rounds if you’re a fan of high-quality contemporary art, particularly if you’d like to see something new, since the gallery shows national artists who haven’t been seen locally as well as local and regional artists.
This month, it’s opening On Painting, featuring the work of two New York-based painters, Daniel Graham Loxton and Lumin Wakoa, who both work in small-scale abstraction, but with different approaches.
“They share a love of paint and its materiality, evidenced by touch and texture in the work,” says the gallery. “Loxton shares an affinity with the cooler, analytical style of German painters such as Michael Krebber and Belgian painters like Walter Swennen. Wakoa in contrast has moved from thinking about the outdoors to painting out-of-doors during the pandemic period. Loxton’s interiority and Wakoa’s increasingly extroverted approach to color in the landscape provide a study in contrasts.”
The show opens Saturday April 9 with a reception from 6-8pm. It runs through Saturday April 30. The gallery is open Thursday-Saturday @ noon-5pm.
