French composer Camille Saint-Saëns short musical suite is so jaunty and lightweight that the composer refused to allow it to be performed in his lifetime. Each of the 14 sections is devoted to a different “animal”: elephants, lions, fish, kangaroos, tortoises, even “pianists”! (Saint-Saëns was a pianist himself.) Since his death in 1922, it’s become a popular concert piece specially on children’s concert program.
Piano Cleveland, Cleveland School of Arts and the Cleveland Museum of Art have come together for a multi-disciplinary rendering of the work featuring music, dance and visual art students from Cleveland School of the Arts. The young musicians will perform along with local professional musicians who work with piano Cleveland, while art students created props, scenery and costumes and dance students provided choreography.
The work will be performer at the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Gartner Auditorium. It’s free and open to the public; tickets are available at the door. Masks are required. Go here for more information.
