Kurentovanje, the Slovenian festival that heralds spring (hopefully), returned to its full live glory for its 10th year, with its neighborly parade and its afternoon of music, food and drink at the National Slovenian Home on St. Clair. This year, most of the action was outside on the patio, the adjoining street or the back parking lot, with bands playing inside tents, and food trucks linking East 64th Street. Despite early word that the building itself would be closed, it was opened so vendors could set up and offer their handmade products and edible treats.
Of course, the favorite activity was posing with the furry “Kurents,” the characters who ring giant bells intended to chase away the winter. Were they successful? I guess we’ll find out!
