For the 15th year, Mary Urbas, gallery coordinator at the Gallery at Lakeland Community College, has put together her show featuring the cream of the area’s women artist, along with some from outside the area (Central Ohio, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina and Oregon). From WOMAN XV… Created by women, of women & about women opened February 20 and will be on view through April 1. It features work in a vast array of media: painting, drawing, collage, assemblage, printmaking, photography, textiles and weaving, sculpture and more.
As is the custom with Urbas’s shows at the Lakeland gallery, the artist reception is held in the middle of the run — this Sunday March 13. It’s free and open to the public. It’s preceded by Lakeland Women’s Center’s annual Woman of Achievement Awards at 2pm.
This year, the featured artist is Kathy Skerritt, who passed away at the age of 62 last August after an eight-year battle with breast cancer.
“I wanted to pay homage to her talent and sensitivities as a visual artist and poet,” said Mary Urbas, exhibition curator and gallery coordinator. “Kathy and her work impacted artists in Northeast Ohio and beyond, on so many levels.”
Urbas and Skerrit’s personal archivist Kelly Pontoni created what they call a “mini-retrospective” of her mixed media artworks on canvas and paper, spanning her 40 years as an artist. It includes “The Breast Chronicles” in which she documented her feelings and thoughts about her breast cancer.
It’s the second time since her death that Skerritt’s work has gone on view. Article gallery and studio, where Skerritt’s last studio was located, featured her work last fall, including some of “The Breast Chronicles.”
Some of the other area artists on view include Leslye Discont Arian, Judith Brandon, Laurel Herbold, Tricia Kaman, Lisa Kenion, Maggy Brown, Deborah Silver, Betty Skufca, Grace Summanen, Judy Takacs, Jaymi Zents – and many more.
