Mon 3/21-Sun 3/27
One of the under appreciated strengths of the Cleveland music scene is its college radio stations. For decades, they’ve given exposure to local bands and to genres of music you’ll never hear a hint of on commercial radio. Their staffs and hosts consist of enthusiasts for their genres, and include both students and community members (some of whom have been on the air for 40+ years.)
WRUW 91.1 FM has been on the air 55 years now, going from a ten-watt station audible only in University Circle in 1967 to a 15,000 watt station today which can be picked up throughout the Greater Cleveland area and even beyond.
This week, from Monday March 21 through Sunday March 27, it’s hosting its annual Telethon, an online and in-person phone banking fundraiser, which funds most of the station’s operations. Listeners can call in during an of the station’s 100 programs and made a pledge to indicate their support of the program and the station in general. After the Telethon is over, you can still make a donation online at telethon.wruw.org.
Also, for the first time this year, donors can contribute a WRUW endowment fund to accumulate interest and support the station into the future.
All donors will be invited to the Second Annual Telethon Pick-up Party at the Jolly Scholar Brewing Company at 11111 Euclid Avenue on Saturday April 6 @ noon6pm to pick up their premiums, meet the station’s DJs and enjoy free appetizers. (Premiums will be mailed t o those who can’t make it.)
