Show Honoring Late Kent Outsider Artist Goes on View with Movie Screening

Fri 2/18 @ 7-10PM

Artist Robert E. Wood, who passed away in 2012, was a local icon and well-known oddball in Kent. A self-taught “outsider” artist, he was known as an unpredictable, unemployed, sometimes homeless, guy who hitched rides around town and engaged in rambling discourses, while documenting the life of Kent, including its music scene. He worked in whatever medium he had at hand: watercolor, pen and ink, even digital prints run off at a local Kinko’s.

Kent’s Standing Rock Cultural Arts is presenting the 6th annual Robert E. Wood Legacy Project Art Exhibition, featuring a display of his work with proceeds going to the Robert E. Wood Legacy Fund to eventually build a cultural center to house his work.

The opening reception at the North water Street Gallery and FJ Kluth Gallery in downtown Kent will feature a screening of the film Drunk Bus, a weird little indie movie from 2020, centering around the relationship of a couple of oddballs, a campus bus driver and a security guard. Tickets to the reception are $5 and should be ordered in advance, due to limited space. The screening will take place from 7-8:30pm, followed by food, beverages and a chance to check out (and purchase) the art from 8:30-10pm.

The show remains on view through Saturday April 2.
