David Bowie has always had a unique connection to Cleveland for many reasons, including the fact that he played his first-ever show on American soil right here at the downtown Public Hall’s Music Hall, a show that instantaneously sold out despite Bowie being largely unknown in this country. He came back two months later and played TWO shows at Public Auditorium, a facility more than three times lager than Music Hall. And through the years, Cleveland audiences have never flagged in their devotion to this chameleon star.
How did this happen? Who was responsible? Plain Dealer reporter Troy L. Smith hosts CLE Rocks, a live podcast taping at the Music Box Supper Club, with three panelists who will shed some light on David Bowie’s enduring appeal in Cleveland. They include former radio personality Billy Bass, who’ll reveal his own discovery of Bowie and how he spread his enthusiasm; Cool Networks publisher Thomas Mulready, a walking Bowie encyclopedia who has hosted numerous multimedia Bowie evenings at local venues; and Cleveland’s premiere music photographer and current editor of CoolCleveland.com, who attended that first Cleveland Bowie show and has photos to prove it.
Admission is free. Doors open at 5pm for dinner; reservation are required for tables.
