One of the best things you can do personally for the environment is to surround your own space with native plants. These plants are better suited for the climate, the soil and the local ecosystem, so they are easier to grow and care for; need less water, fertilizer and pesticide; and provide a habitat for native birds, insects and animals.
Cuyahoga Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) is helping home gardeners do their part with its sale of native seed, plants, and trees/shrubs.
You can order the seed any time of the year; each packet covers 250 square feet. They come in six different varieties to suit your particular need: Mesic Woodland Edge, Rain Garden, Ohio Pollinator Oasis, Butterfly/Hummingbird, Midwest Wildflower Mix and an Annual Seed Mix.
Native plant kits can be ordered through March 31 and are shipped in June. Four types are available with 50 plugs covering about 200 square feet in each: Prairie, Prairie Grass, Shade, and Rain Garden.
Deadline for ordering native plants/trees/shrubs is March 13; orders ship In early April. Check out the specific varieties and place orders at cuyahogaswcd.org. Click on Native Seed, Plant, and Tree/Shrub sales.
