There are about 8 different types of owls living in Ohio and in the winter, with trees bare, they’re easier to spot. Just last week, at the Lakefront Nature Center, we saw several people will binoculars who told us they were responding to reports of a sighting of the Saw-whet owl.
If you want to learn more about these unusual looking birds, whose knowing appearance has caused them to become a symbol for wisdom, come out to Cleveland Metroparks’ North Chagrin Nature Center for the annual Owl Hoot-enanny. You’ll get to see the nature center’s “owl ambassadors” close up as well as take an “owl prowl” hike to see if you can spot owls in their natural surroundings. There are three half-hour family-friendly hikes at 11am, noon and 3pm, plus a longer hike from 2:30-3:30pm that offers a more in-depth look at finding and identifying owls and learning about their habits.
In addition, at 11:30am and 3:30pm Joe Dorrian of the Ohio School of Falconry will demonstrate flying different types of owls and other raptors. Activities will take place outdoors so dress warmly.
The Owl Hoot-enanny is free. Get more info here.
