Fri 1/21 @ 10:30-11:30AM & 4-5:30PM
You may be rolling your eyes at this, but there is a National Squirrel Appreciation Day (!), coming up on Friday January 21. A friend of mine isn’t celebrating the squirrel who jumped out of a tree, landed on her balcony, took a bite of a nice, ready-to-pick bell pepper and left the rest behind. Whoever owns the bird feeder in Cleveland Heights that the agile squirrel pictured above was attacking probably isn’t throwing a party either.
Ok, they’re cute — let’s give them that. So Summit Metro Park is hosting a couple of celebrations. You can join a naturalist Friday morning @ 10:30-11:30am at the F.A. Seiberling Nature Realm Campfire area to learn to identify different types of squirrels and how they perform a useful role in the environment other than tearing up your garden. You can also build a make-and-take backyard squirrel feeder, which might keep them out of your bid feeder. MIGHT. The program is all outdoors so dress warm. Registration is required.
Also on Friday January 21 @ 4-5:30pm at the Summit Lake Nature Center, a program called “Going Nutty” will feature a hike along the Towpath while a guide answers questions you might have about squirrels and their habits. “Learn about the fluffy acrobats hanging out at your feeders.” As you can see above, that’s an accurate description.
For information about both programs, call 330-865-8065 or go to summitmetroparks.org/ProgramsAndEvents.
