Woodchoppers Ball in Kent Features Stellar Lineup of Guitar Pickers

Brian Henke

Sat 12/11 @ 7PM

The annual Woodchopper’s Ball at the Kent Stage, started by Cleveland acoustic finger-style guitarist Brian Henke, is now celebrating its 20th year and of course, he’s one of the performers. And as usual, he’s joined by a lineup of stellar guitarists he’s collected from around the region, both road-tested veterans and bright newcomers.

Most of the names will be familiar to those who’ve attended past Woodchoppers Balls. The players include Indiana’s Patrick Woods; Helen Avakian and Dave Irwin, a duo from Madison, Wisonsin who perform as the Red Door Duo; Virginia’s Matt Thomas, known for his unique harp guitar; northeast Ohio retired teacher/guitar builder Jesse Smith; Michigander Bill Russell; and Woodchoppers Ball regular Mark Sganga from New York. While most play finger-style guitar similar to Henke’s, each with their unqiue spin, the lineup also includes Atlanta duo the Night Travellers, featuring James McKinney on banjo and Niki Portman on bass.

The show is a benefit for the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless (NEOCH). Tickets are $30-$40.
