Cleveland theater organization Playwrights Local exists to support playwrights by presenting their work at all stages of development and encourage their growth. One of the steps is the staged reading of a play, so the writer can hear what his work sounds like when the words are articulated by actors.
This week, it’ll do a staged reading of the new play, The Mirror Effect, written by Oana Leuca, a Romanian writer currently working on her MFA in playwriting MFA in the multi-university NEOMFA writing program. The synopsis tells us that the play “presents Amanda Reis, a self-searching female writer who explores her inner life through language and disguise. Her story is inspired by the lives and work of other female artists (Sylvia Plath, Virginia Woolf, Anne Sexton, Marilyn Monroe, etc.). Her poetic monologue is an astronaut’s shout in space, a place where sound waves can’t travel. She is a clown afraid of clowns, an actress trying to free herself from her persona.”
Christine McBurney directs the cast of seven performers. It takes place at the Creative Space on Waterloo, 397 East 156thStreet. It’s free and no ticket or reservation is required but masks and proof of vaccination are.
