The LatinUs Theater Company, located at the new Pivot Center for Art, Dane and Expression on the near west side, is a recent addition to the local theater scene. As the Ohio’s first independent Latino theater its mission is to produce Spanish-language theater to share the arts and culture of the Hispanic community.
Its upcoming production Public Bathrooms (Baños Públicos, S.A.) is a Cuban comedy, written by Esther Suárez Durán. In it a woman attendant in a public bathroom engages a male user of the government-run facility in a conversation that includes suggestions of capitalistic opportunities.
“Together the pair confront contemporary Cuban challenges with witty, subtle and satirical dialog while taking care of life’s business,” reads the summary.
Monica Torres-Cabán. directs the production, which includes in the cast Lakewood resident Rocky Encalada, who is of Cuban descent and Venezulan Omar De La Cruz who lives in Chagrin Falls.
The production features projected English supertitles so non-Hispanic audiences can learn more about the culture. And art and crafts from local Hispanic artists will be for sale in the theater’s lobby.
The play runs Friday-Sunday, through Sunday December 19. Tickets are $25 for general admission, $20 for students and $15 for seniors. A vaccination card or recent negative COVID test is required.
