Tremont’s St. John Cantius Festival Honors Its Polish Heritage

Sat 10/16 @ 3-11PM

St. John Cantius on Professor Avenue describes itself as “The Polish Heart of Tremont,” and given its location, it’s also the heart of the neighborhood. And like many of the vintage churches in Tremont it has a spectacular interior worth seeing.

It also has its own little Polish festival going on that it’s calling “Halfway to Dyngus Day,” that day-after-Easter cutting loose that takes place next year on April 18, 2022. The festival may not be as big as the three-day bash out at St. Stanislaus in Slavic Village, but it should be more neighborly and low key, and the food — stuffed cabbage dinners, pierogis, kielbasa sandwiches — and Polish beer should be just as good.

This festival will also have live polka music, provided by Lenny Gomulka and the Chicago Push, who play the Polish-style polka associated with Chicago, much as the Slovenian style is associated with Cleveland. Get ready to dance off that food you ate too much of!
