The Akron Civic Theatre’s annual benefit masquerade ball is back, although perhaps its 2019 theme, based on Edgar Allan Poe’s short story, “The Masque of the Red Death,” is better forgotten, since it could certainly be seen as a predictor of/parable for COVID.
Although they’re still describing the party called ‘The Masque Returns,” as a “macabre” and “decadent” adult party, they’re not hitting that particular angle again. They’re just inviting people 21 and over to deck themselves out in elaborate finery to enjoy an evening at the striking, ornate theater where a $75 ticket gets you a full bar, signature cocktail, hors d’oeuvres and a variety of entertainments throughout the building, including live music by Ghouls Just Want to Have Fun. There’ll be dancing on the stage of the main auditorium starting at 9. And unexpected things will be popping up all evening, with strolling entertainers, fortune tellers and more both upstairs and down.
