Oberlin Conservatory opens its fall season with a festival featuring concerts, symposiums, sporting events and more, taking place Saturday October 9 and Sunday October 10. The event is titled “Music, Sports and the Enduring Influence of Ancient Greece.”

It features a packed weekend of activities, with each day offering a pair of faculty recitals and a symposium. Other activities include a student-athlete and student-musician listening party; a sound installation by the TIMARA program’s technical director Abby Aresty and students form the Sound Crafting Lab; a family field day; field hockey, volleyball and soccer games; and self-guided tours of the Allen Memorial Art Museum, focusing on works in its collection relating to ancient Greece and its continued influence.

Saturday’s symposium features three diverse looks by Oberlin professors at the intersection of the arts and culture with sports, viewed through the lens of ancient Greece. On Sunday, topics include a poem by the Greek poet Pindar about an ancient Olympic winner; diversity and inclusion in Oberlin athletics; “Reimagined Approaches to Music Theory;” and a particular intriguing topic, “Cheating and Magic in Ancient Sports.” “This talk explores foul play in ancient sports in Greece and Rome, focusing on how magic could be used to ensure a win and defeat one’s enemies,” they tell us. The talks will be live streamed from David H. Stull Recital Hall.
