What do you get when you throw together some of Akron’s most storied musicians of the past with some of its hot young talents of today? The answer is the new ensemble Pin 2 Hot, which describes itself as “rock ’n’ roll/soul/folk melodies and riffs” [deconstructed/reassembled] in the style of the great free jazz improviser, Albert Ayler.”
It’s unsurprising that the band features three members of the great Tin Huey, who did that sort of thing back in the late 70s: guitarist Chris Butler (who also led the Waitresses). Percussionist Stuart Austin and guitarist Michael Aylward. Percussionist Bob Ethington of Unit 5, cellist Matt Reese of Flying Carpet People, bassist Corey Jenkins of Time Cat and Big Pop, and reeds player Christina Cruder of Blank Canvas Theatre and Rocky Mountain Repertory Theater round out the group.
“Have you ever noticed that in stressful times, music and art get freer, more experimental, and exuberantly playful?” says Chris Butler, the band’s “Anti-Leader and Instigator.” “World War I begat Dada, the Civil Rights movement and the Viet Nam war begat free jazz and Day-Glo psychedelia and freeform everything? PIN 2 HOT is very much a product of ourscrewy era — a mix of trained musicians and self-taught rock ‘n’ rollers who all share a need and love to break out of traditional song structures, and just make a racket.”
The ensemble will be performing at Akron’s Rialto Theatre. Cleveland singer/songwriter Samantha Grace and Ed Patoka’s Sound Dart, who perform original music on handmade instruments, will be joining them for a very different evening of music.
Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 day of show.
