Apollo’s Fire, Cleveland’s baroque orchestra, starts its 30th season with music beloved by its followers. In “Vivaldi’s Four Seasons rediscovered ,” AP’s founder/artist director Jeannette Sorrell conducts her ensemble in an exploration of composer Antonio Vivaldi’s 18th-century Italian milieu that features his Concerto for Two Cellos and La Folia (“Madness”).
Joining the group as the violin soloist on Four Seasons is young Spanish musician Francisco Fullana, making his area debut as he’s starting to acquire an international reputation. He plays a 1735 Guarneri violin, which Sorrell says is especially appropriate for this piece because “the violin was made in the same time and place as Vivaldi’s music.” René Schiffer and Sarah Stone will be featured in the Concerto for Two Cellos.
In addition, the October 22 and 24th performances at the Cleveland Musician of Art will include projected images designed by Camilla Tassi, featuring baroque paintings whose images dovetail with moments evoked by the Four Seasons.
The concerts also celebrate the release of a new album featuring the Apollo’s Fire/Francisco Fullana version of Four Seasons on the British AVIE label. A CD release event with a signing by the artists will follow the October 21 and 23 concerts.
They’ll perform the program Thursday October 21 at St. Raphael Catholic Church in Bay Village; on Friday October 22 and Sunday October 2 at the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Gartner Auditorium; on Saturday October 23 at the Bath Church; and on Monday October 25 at St. Noel Catholic Church in Willoughby Hills. Masks and proof of vaccination (or negative COVID test) are required for all concerts A watch-at-home option is also available.
