Fri 8/6-Fri 8/13

Cleveland-born artist Phil Brody aka WRDSMTH returned to his hometown for an eight-day mural painting marathon. That left behind 18 murals from Cleveland Heights to University Circle to Lakewood. His work features tongue-in-cheek messages accompanied by his signature typewriter. Especially for Cleveland he created his largest mural on Payne at East 26th, a tribute to Michael Stanley that said “Thank god for the man who sang ‘thank god for the man who put the white lines on the highway.'” From the cherrypicker where he worked, you could look across the Inner Belt and see the site of the old Agora where the Michael Stanley Band recorded their Stagepass album.

Throughout the week, WRDSMTH fans and curious onlookers stopped by to see how the work was going. A couple of MSB fans stopped by Payne; Jules & Frank Belkin visited while the artist was working at the back entrance of the Cleveland Institute of Art. And a University Circle Inc cop inspected the work going up on a wall across from UCI headquarters wondering whether there would be a signature typewriter. There was!

The week was sponsored by local nonprofit Graffiti HeArt which sponsors mural art across the city, connecting street artists with commission and raising money for art scholarships.
