Mid-August! Realizing at fall was just ahead, we took our annual midweek trip to Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island to enjoy a last whiff of summer. The visit included a trip to Gibraltar Island via water taxi where the Ohio State University’s Stone Lab, which studies the lake ecosystem, is located. We also visited the Nature & Wildlife Center to check out their new wing which includes a turtle pond and beehive, and of course stopped at the Chocolate Cafe to tend to our sweet tooth.
Taking the 8pm Miller Ferry back to the mainland the sun was already setting, an hour earlier than if we’d come in June. There’s still time to enjoy the island though: the 5th annual Put-in-Bay music festival, a family-friendly day of pop, zydeco, bluegrass and folk music, takes place September 18.
