New Akron Soul Train Installation Looks at Interconnectedness

Fri 7/16 @ 11AM-7PM

Akron Soul Train is an organization that provides short residencies to artists in various disciplines, ending with a performance or a show in its gallery.

This week it’ll present the results of its first residency of its 2021 season. Called Interwebbing, it features the mixed-media work of artist Candy Coated, who has a LOT to say about it which you can read here.

“Early one brisk morning while sipping tea in the California sun gazing at the beautiful golden landscape that lay before me, I noticed tiny sparkles dancing about in my peripheral vision,” she begins. “Turning my head towards that flitting light revealed the source as a dewy spider web sparkling in the sunlight. Looking closer, I saw that at each web intersection sat a jewel-like water drop reflecting the environment and all the other ‘jewel’ droplets within itself.”

She adds, “My mind was blown by this vision infinite interconnectedness. An understanding that all beings and things are connected came over me, and a knowing that often things are more connected than we realize.”

That realization fueled Interwebbing, inspired by Buddhism and the artist’s travels including to China. It incorporates drawing, panting, digital photography, textiles and found objects arranged in large-scale installations that include patchworked quilted panel, gemstone paintings, photos of porcelain flowers, pastel and cut-paper drawings and large-format digital prints of images taken in her travels and collaged with mirrors and vinyl stickers.

The show will be on view through Saturday August 28. Akron Soul Train is open Wednesday-Saturday @ 11am-4pm, with extended hours until7pm on Friday.
