Grateful Dead leader Jerry Garcia would be turning 79 on August 1 — if he hadn’t ruined his health and died at the age of 53 in 1995, robbing devoted fans of potentially many years of music.
But in the 30 years they were together with Garcia, they made so much music it takes volumes and volumes and many tribute bands to cover it all. Luckily the next Live at the Lighthouse concert at the Lighthouse Amphitheater behind the Fairport Harbor Marine Museum & Lighthouse has two Grateful Dead tribute bands lined up to headline their Jerry Garcia Birthday Concert.
One is Cleveland-based Dead tribute Dupree’s Dead Band. The other, Sunshine Daydream, hails from Springfield, Illinoisand calls itself a “fast-paced Grateful Dead Funky Dance Party Jam Band in a refreshing high energy, up-tempo style.” Its repertoire features 15 dead tunes in sets aimed at both Deadheads and casual listeners.
There’ll be a third band as well to give concertgoers a lot for their money — except no money is involved. The concert is free.
