Women’s Air & Space Museum’s New Exhibit Focuses on Lesser Known Women Aviators

Wed 6/30 @ 7PM

While the International Women’s Air & Space Museum (IWASM), located at Burke Lakefront airport, started regular in-person hours back in March, it’s now opening its first virtual exhibit titled, Defying the Odds: Exploring the Impact of Women and Aviation in the First Half of the 20th Century. It will debut with special event Wednesday June 30.

“Since we’ve added virtual experiences to our programming line-up, we are better equipped to bring history to life,” says IWASM Executive Director Sara Fisher in the event press release. “Even with our reopening, we are building new avenues to bring the history of women in all areas of aviation directly to our communities.”

The new exhibit focuses on women who aren’t as well known as Amelia Earhart or Bessie Coleman. They include such flyers as Lotfia El Nadi, Katherine Sui Fun Cheung, Thérèse Peltier and Hazel Ying Lee (pictured), who flew for the military in World War II and died in a plane crash in 1944.

The exhibit launch will take place on Zoom. Admission is a $5 minimum donation. To register for the event, go here.
