With all of the new art neighborhoods and clusters that have emerged in the last 20 years, it’s easy to forget that Little Italy was the original Cleveland arts neighborhood. And despite the incursion of some of those Lego townhomes and Soviet apartment blocks, the neighborhood still retains much of its charm, including a plethora of small businesses and locally owned restaurants. (Just stand on the corner of Mayfield and Murray Hill and smell the garlic and hear the opera recordings emanating from La Dolce Vita). There are even still a surprising number of artist studios: we always hear about local events from portrait painter Tricia Kaman, one of a number of artists who still works out of the old Murray Hill Schoolhouse.
Several times a year the neighborhood still hosts an art walk (yes, Tricia let us know & her studio will be open for visitors) and if you haven’t been in a while, you should go and rediscover it. Leave yourself plenty of time for a leisurely meal after checking out boutiques such as Urban Orchid, Moonstruck CLE Vintage (hosting an artist reception for Julie Cook Friday evening) and La Bella Vita. There’s an ice cream social in Tony Brush Park on Saturday, a vendor village and live musicians playing throughout the neighborhood. You’ll want to take home some baked goods from Presti’s or Corbo’s as well.
