Poet/playwright/author Dr. Mary E. Weems is well known in this area for the awards she’s won, books she’s published and her cultural diversity work. She’s even served as Poet Laureate of Cleveland Heights. So it’s good news to hear she’s been working on something new.
That new play, titled Crack the Door for Some Air, will get a reading on Zoom this week through Dobama Theatre, directed by India Nicole Burton and featuring a cast of prominent local actors. Based on a true incident, it depicts the events following a Black man who calls the non-emergency number when he notices a neighbor’s door cracked open. The play “explores the unjust reality of police brutality against Black women in America and how it affects families and communities.”
The free reading will be followed by a conversation. To register for the event, go here.
