Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Has Two New Baby Tigers!

One recent piece of news has a lot of Clevelanders suffering from cuteness overload.

The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo just announced that the Amur tigers, Zoya and Hector, who live at its Rosebrough Tiger Passage, became the proud parents of twins sometime Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. According to the zoo, first-time mom Zoya wasn’t all that enthused about being a mom.

They relate, “While tigers are solitary animals, mother tigers typically raise their young for their first two years. However, it is not uncommon for first-time mother tigers to become overwhelmed with this new life experience and the Zoo’s Animal Care team closely monitored all maternal behaviors following birth. After thorough observation, Zoya displayed minimal signs of maternal care, requiring the cubs to be raised separately with the help of Zoo veterinary and husbandry care experts.”

As a result, zookeepers are bottle-feeding the babies five times a day and report that they are developing normally. Come spring, if all goes well, they should be greeting visiors at Rosebrough Tiger Passage along with their parents. In the meantime, you can follow their growth and development of the zoo’s social media, and of course, learn about the inevitable naming contest.
