MANSFIELD: Hello Friends and Fans

During the run-up to the 2020 presidential election I was, without a doubt, more prolific than I’d ever been previously in my writing career. Pleased that I was able to do my small part in taking up my pen to meet head on the “clear and present” challenge tRump posed to the country and body politic, I’m now satisfied the danger has passed and — over a period of time — the country can return to a semblance of normality, but not return to the ugly past.

So, while I’ll continue to write an article from time to time on current events, I’m going to devote the majority of my writing time and skills in an attempt to the master the genre of fiction — historical fiction, to be exact.

There are a couple of ideas for writing projects floating around in my head that I’d like to delve into, but first I’ll have to go back and read (or in some cases re-read) books by fiction masters such as Ralph Ellison, Richard Wright, William Faulkner, Toni Morrison and a host of others — that is, if I want to be any good at it.

Please don’t desert me. I’ll be cranking out what I hope is an incisive article from time to time, and in the not too distant future I probably will have a few fiction short stories to share. I’m far from done yet — I’m just trying to expand on my meager skills and talents before I slip into my dotage.

  1. Mansfield, I wish you my best in your next chapter, as you explore your writing talents in new genres. I sometimes skim other sections of CoolCleveland but I ALWAY read your articles. I love your direct succinct style. I look forward to your insights when you do have the time and inspiration to blog in the future. 🙂

Great Idea! If you’d consider posting your reading list, I’d like to follow your journey. I don’t want to intrude into your creative process, not in a bookclub fashion. I’d like to broaden my exposure to the writers that you’ve listed and any detours of interest you may take. I’m primarily a visual artist, but the authors you’ve listed are known for their mastery. In any case, good luck!
