Akron Soul Train Looking for Applications for 2021 Artist Residencies

Through Thu 12/21

Akron Soul Train isn’t a new version of the old TV R&B dance show. It’s a program that offers (usually) month-long residencies to artists in all disciplines: visual arts, music, theater and dance performance, filmmaking and literature. It awards the artist (or artists) a fellowship to provide resources to create a project to be showcased in the Akron Soul Train gallery in downtown Akron or, in the case of performances, with collaboration with a partner organization. Artists are also asked to do a community-facing component, a workshop, talk, discussion or presentation of some kind.

“I was able to collaborate with Floco Torres, NCCAkron, and Stephen Tomasko,” says artist Micah Kraus, who is currently part of a group show at the Akron Art Museum. “Having the exhibition after the residency pushed me to make a cohesive body of work, which has led to artistic momentum as well as many art sales. Additionally, I have been invited to exhibit in other shows because of the exposure of the residency and exhibit.”

Currently, applications are open for 2021 and will be accepted through December 31. For more information on criteria and how to submit, go to akronsoultrain.org/apply-for-residency.
