Apostle Jones is a newcomer to the Cleveland music scene, having formed less than two years ago. But their sound is very old, harking back to the classic rock of the late ’60s and early ’70s, when the music of bands like Traffic, the Allman Brothers, Blind Faith and Humble Pie was laced with blues and soul.
Despite the pandemic, this has been a music-making year for the ensemble led by vocalist Mikey Silas. Earlier this year, they released their first album Live from Cleveland, which featured a broadcast they did for Case Western Reserve’s radio station WRUW 91.1 FM on March 5, just before the shutdown. Already they’re following it up with a four-song EP called Lilith, with three new songs Silas wrote while in quarantine.
“The themes of the 4-song EP range from revolution and coming together, to how it feels when the structures of our city, community and world are falling apart and —figuratively and literally — burning,” Silas says in the album press release. “With the holy shift of life happening all around us, I think every artist needs to ask how am I willing — needing — to adapt to keep creating when our normal outlets are shut-down.”
The album was recorded at the Center for Rock Research in Cleveland’s AsiaTown neighborhood, kicked off by an in-studio livestreamed concert. Now the band is holding an actual album release show at the Music Box as part of its Fresh Finds series. Tickets are $8-$12 at musicboxcle.com/fresh-finds.
Doors open at 6 for the 8pm show. Tickets must be purchased in advance for social distancing purposes.
