San Francisco playwright Luaren Gunderson is known for working her activism into her plays. Her 2017 work The Revolutionists is no different. In it, four women — three historical figures and one symbolic composite — get together in 1793 Paris to fight back against the extreme violence of the so-called “Reign of Terror” and end up in the guillotine themselves. While the play has serious implications, it’s rendered with high humor and irreverence.
Four performers from northeast Ohio and Ontario have gotten together to perform the play in a version they’re posting online to raise money for charities. Cleveland’s Jailyn Harris plays the fictional Haitian slave Marianne Angelle; while Akron’s Olivia King is playwright Oympe de Gouges. Ontarians Caitlin Feldman and Melissa Morris join them as, respectively, Charlotte Cordray and Marie Antoinette.
Tickets are available by emailing equalityproductionscincy@gmail.com through Paypal or Venmo, with a suggested donation of $10. Designate which of the three charities receives 100% of your donation: Black Theatre Workshop, Black Women’s Health Imperative or northeast Ohio storytellers group Seat of the Pants.
You’ll get a link to watch the production between midnight and 11:59pm Saturday August 22. Plan on two hours to watch. On Sunday August 23 @ noon-1pm there’s a talkback and post-show celebration with the cast and crew where you can ask questions about the production.
