PHOTOSTREAM: LGBTQ+ March for Black Lives by Anastasia Pantsios

06.27.2020 Black Trans Lives Vigil

Sat 6/27

About 150 people gathered on a Saturday morning to march from the corner of West 29th and Detroit, once the hub of the LGBTQ community, the LGBT Community Center at West 67th and Detroit. There they took seats in the street, almost all wearing masks and many socially distancing, to hear from community activists, including leaders of the LGBT Center and state senator Nickie Antonio, and hear the names of victims of police violence read, along with those of black trans women, one of the groups most vulnerable to violence in the community.

The predominantly young, white crowd was peaceful, loving and respectful; many people brought their young children. Still, police circled the area in a helicopter for most of the clearly low-key small event. Your tax dollars at work!
