For more than three decades, the nonprofit Let’s Grow Akron has been working to support community gardening in parts of the city where fresh produce can be scarce. It locates vacant lots to put into productive use, provides assistance to growers in creating and maintaining plots, and offers educational programs, including food preparation and preservation, seed saving and composting. In addition to encouraging people to eat better and stay healthier, the gardens also strengthen community bonds.
It also hosts a plant sale, where all growers can help support its worth by purchasing vegetables, herbs, annual flowers, seeds and native perennial seedlings. You can shop online through Thursday May 14 and sign up for a half hour pickup window during the weekend of the Sale May 16-17. Volunteers will load your care, following health and safety guidelines.
You can also sign up for a half hour window to come shop at the sale site at 292 East Market Street, where a volunteer will help you with your order. Ohio Direction Cards (SNAP/EBT) can be used to buy plants and seeds.
