WOLFS Gallery on Larchmere has just opened a new show — online of course — of the work of Cleveland Institute of Art graduate Clarence Holbrook Carter (1904-2000). Titled Clarence Holbrook Carter: Metamorphosis of an American Surrealist, it features 200 works from Carter’s estate.
In his long career, Holbrook cycled through many styles and movements during the rapidly changing art scene of the 20th century. Working in oils, watercolors and drawing, he painted scenes of rural America during the depression, then later large architectural canvases. In the 40s and 50s, he worked in advertising, before moving on to focus on his own studio work. Though his work encompassed constantly changing styles, they were united by common themes of life and death and the space between them.
The show is now online and an illustration catalog with essays by Dr. Marianne Berardi and the late James A. Michener accompanies the exhibition.
