Area Conservancies Celebrate Earth Day by Inviting People to Pick Up Trash

Sat 4/22

Cleveland’s Earth Day coalition, which for more than 30 years hosted EarthFest at venues such as the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and the Berea Fairground, dissolved in 2018 and pulled the plug on EarthFest.

Sadly, they didn’t make it to the 50th anniversary of Earth Day this April 22. But two of the area’s conversation organizations West Creek Conservancy and the Doan Creek Watershed Partnership are suggesting a way you can celebrate Earth Day on your own while making a positive impact on the community.

Pick a day — any day — and when you go out for a walk, take a trash bag. Fill it with the ubiquitous bottles, fast food containers, plastic bags, Amazon and Chewy cartons, and other debris scattered everywhere. West Creek Conservancy invites you to post pictures of your cleanup on social media with the hashtag #WestCreektrashtag. And: “Please stop littering!” they beg. “We filled 6 garbage bags with trash and picked up 4 tires, part of a shopping cart, old computer, and car bumper this weekend all while social distancing!”

Doan Brook Partnership has issued its first-ever Spring Cleanup Challenge April 1-30. It’s also asking people to take a trash bag on their walks and keep track of the types and amounts of litter they pack up. There’s a form on their website to submit the info do that they can compile it and hopefully demonstrate what individuals can do collectively. It’s inviting to send photos of yourself at work or before and after photos of areas you’ve cleaned up, through email or Facebook.

Be sure to wear protective gloves and practice social distancing.
