Pre-Teen Dance Competitions Fuel New Play

UPDATE:

This week’s performances have been cancelled.

The following performances of DANCE NATION are cancelled:

Thursday, March 12
Friday, March 13
Saturday, March 14
Sunday, March 15

It’s with a heavy heart that we must cancel this week’s performances (Thursday, 3/12-Sunday, 3/15) of Dance Nation. Dobama takes the safety and health of our audiences, artists, and staff very seriously. We took this action in order to be proactive and out of an abundance of caution. Consequently, Governor DeWine’s order that all theater gatherings of more than 100 people must be suspended confirmed that our decision was the correct one.

If you have tickets for a cancelled show, we will be happy to exchange them for a future performance of Dance Nation. We appreciate your patience as the Box Office handles these requests.

Dobama’s administrative staff and Board of Directors will be meeting regularly to assess the constantly evolving situation and to make decisions that are first and foremost in the best interests of the community we serve.

Decisions will be made on a week-by-week basis on what future performances will go on. Please stay tuned to our website and social media for further updates as we continue to assess the situation. Thank you for your ongoing support at this difficult time for everyone.

For the past 60 years, Dobama Theatre has overcome many obstacles and challenges because of the support of the community we serve here in Northeast Ohio. We remain grateful for your support which makes all we do possible.

Stay healthy and take care of each other!

Wed 3/4-Sun 3/29

With the explosion of dance competition shows on television, it seems inevitable that someone would have written a play like Dance Nation. Clare Barron’s play debuted in 2018, following a group of pre-teen competitive dancers plotting the world takeover and self-empowerment. The play was a finalist for the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for drama.

When Dance Nation has its Cleveland premiere at Dobama Theatre this week, the young dancers will be played by adult actors, adding another layer to the play’s implications. New York-based Shannon Sindelar directs the production, which opens with preview performances Wed 3/4 and Thu 3/5, with official opening night Fri 3/6. It runs through Sun 3/29, with performances Thursdays @ 7:30pm, Fridays and Saturdays @ 8pm and Sundays @ 2:30pm.
